An Ancient, Mysterious Indian Society
War, Mass assassinations or controversial Government policies, whenever any important event has happened in human history, many conspiracies have evolved. These conspiracies haven’t necessarily revealed truth or lie, but they have always managed to tell us grey areas about these events.
India is an ancient civilization. Ofcourse, there will be lots of conspiracy theories. One of them is, “Ashoka’s 9 Unknown Men”. This is also stated as “The Secret Society of 9 Men” at many references.
The formation of secret society
In 261 B.C. which is around 2300 years ago, the infamous Mauryan Empire and Kalinga Empire War was fought when Ashoka invaded Kalinga. Irrespective of anyone’s victory or defeat, such wars are of colossal nature. Destruction was certain and took thousands of lives.
The aftermath of Kalinga was furiously devastating and shook Ashoka who vowed to never fight a war again. He moved to Buddhism. Ashoka strived hard to integrate the rebellious people, declaring that the only true conquest was to win men’s hearts by observance of the laws of duty and piety. He preached that the Sacred Majesty desired that all living creatures should enjoy security, peace, and happiness and be free to live as they pleased”.
Ashoka was very committed to his mission to such an extent that he sought to prevent his fellow man from putting their intelligence towards perpetrating evil, particularly the evil involved with warfare.
The task of collecting, preserving, and containing all knowledge was too great for one emperor to do alone. There were many other duties required in ruling an empire. So Ashoka called upon 9 most brilliant minds of that time. It was during his devotion, he found a Secret Society of 9 Men.
One of the oldest societies
9 unknown men’s society is not just India’s but one of the oldest societies in the whole world. It is evident in scriptures dating back to as old as Ashoka’s reign regarding which we will discuss later.
How this society worked?
Many legends comprising magicians, spiritual, mysterious personalities have been born in India with their respective ideologies. Many of these ideologies have been scientifically backed such as Astrology and Vastu.
9 men based on their expertise were selected. They were allotted to carry on with their respective area of study. They were made responsible to preserve the knowledge, revise and update it regularly. But they had to do all this very secretly without revealing their identities.
These 9 men lived like Monk, promoting ideologies of Buddhists while they did research and collected information and knowledge about their respective subjects.
How did society continue for so long?
When one of these 9 members had to retire or in the event of anyone’s death, each one of them had a successor who would carry on with their research. At any given point of time, the society comprised exactly 9 members, no more, no less and they could be from any place.
Why only 9 members constituted the society?
One would think that if there would be more people to work, there will be more subjects to learn and more knowledge could be gained. But 9 has a special significance in Hindu mythology:
- 9 planets
- 9 universal elements of Hindu philosophy
- 9 Ratna / influential persons in a King’s council
- 9 days of Navratri Festival
9 Fields of Study for these scholars:
There were 9 fields of discipline based on which expertise, the 9 members were chosen:
- Propaganda
- Physiology
- Microbiology
- Alchemy
- Communication
- Gravity
- Cosmogony
- Light
- Sociology
So between these 9 subjects, everything that a powerful kingdom should have, were covered. There were topics in these subjects which were top secret and formed the major mysterious part about this society. For example: How, merely one touch could kill someone, which was controversially named as “Touch of Death” was studied. It is believed that physical art like Judo, originated from this stream.
All the 9 members worked united for one objective i.e. to protect their study at all cost. They would make sure that none of these powerful ideas or knowledge is exposed in order to prevent it from any evil or wrong use.
Objective of forming this society
It is said that when the time is right and India as a country is ready to be progressive and accept change, these findings will be revealed for the welfare of citizens and human beings as a whole. It is believed that in the past, whenever the system needed, these research findings have been used to maintain balance at various points of time.
How did the modern world come to know about the society of 9 unknown men?
The first evidence of its supposed finding was in 1923 when Tabot Mundy wrote “The Nine Unknown Men”. His book has mentioned the 9 scholars and has revealed that he came to know about them when he was serving the British Army in India during British rule. It is surprising that this was hidden even from Indians but an outsider (foreigner) came to know about this.
The basis of the author’s Tabot Mundy findings is credited to transcripts written at the time of Ashoka himself. But the detailed study on 9 subjects cannot be believed as one man’s job. It can be safely assumed that there was a group working on these subjects which could be this very hidden society of 9 men.
Has anyone managed to meet any of the members?
Louis Pauwels and Jacques Bergier wrote a book, “The morning of Magicians” which has an interesting story claiming that Pope Sylvester 2 has already met these 9 men and when he returned after this meeting, he had some strange, never seen before gadgets.
One of these gadgets was a doll, also termed as “The Bronze Doll”. This doll could answer in Yes / No. When allegedly the Pope thought to tell everyone about this doll, he died mysteriously.
The findings of the society was well ahead of its time
In 1954, a Journal wrote that the doll brought from India by Pope Sylvester, was programmed using the Binary Number system like a modern electronic machine. The doll was possibly the first use of A.I. (Artificial Intelligence).
Few years later, a Swiss Physician, Alexendra discovered the vaccine for Cholera. When Alexendra was in India, Cholera was at its peak. It is said that he was able to meet one of the 9 scholars who shared the knowledge of curing Cholera which helped Alexendra to make its vaccine.
We may have witnessed one of more of these unknown men
It is also claimed that modern world’s scientists like Jagdish Chandra Bose were one of the strong believers of this society. In another typical idea, it is said, Vikram Sarabhai, Sir Isaac Newton, Dr. A.P.J, Abdul Kalam, Albert Einstein have been one of the parts of this mysterious society. It is believed that they have used few snippets from the secret knowledge of this society for the advancement of the world. And if we observe, all these names have made some world transforming discoveries.
Myth or reality?
Allegedly, this society has existed for more than 2000 years. Maintaining secrecy for such a long period, controlling global events from an undisclosed, hidden, jungle like location in India without assistance of modern infrastructure, technology or equipment, is extremely hard to believe. However there have been events which could not be explained ever. It is unlikely that we will ever come to know if such a secret society did really exist in India?
